To think it all started with Toadette and a Mushroom Crown. There is a new craze sweeping the Super Mario Fandom and that craze makes a certain internet rule ring true. That’s right, I’m talking about Internet Rule 63: “For every given male character, there is a female version of that character. And vice versa.”
Now, what character could possibly be given a opposite gender counterpart and how does the new item the Mushroom Crown have anything to do with it? One word: Bowsette. Yup, you read right, I’ll even let that sink in for a minute….

You good? You still with me? Alright. Now, how did this happen? Well, lets start with what we know. Not to bore everyone with the details I’ll give it to you fast and straight.
- New item gets introduced for the newest Super Mario game for the Nintendo Switch–the Mushroom Crown.
- Mushroom Crown has the ability to turn Toadette into Peachette. (A humanoid version of Toadette that looks like Princess Peach)

Now, anyone who has been on the internet has seen how Bowsette has completely turned art–and the way we will see bowser, on it’s proverbial head forever. But, art is not the only thing that has been affected greatly by this new gender bend. Cosplayers (especially female cosplayers) have been releasing a constant stream of photos of their versions of the infamous gender bend.

But, the question is, why is Bowsette such an addicting cosplay idea in the first place? Is it because she is voluptuous and gorgeous? Is because she represents a much loved video game character? Or maybe it’s because there’s a certain allure to genderbending characters. Perhaps it could be a mix of everything.
After a little digging, I managed to find an article from the Entertainment blog: This Is News that sums it up perfectly in my humble opinion.
“It’s easy to write Bowsette off as just a meme for thirsty Twitter users looking for their next lunch break fix. But that just isn’t the case. Bowsette is incredibly popular because she means many things to many different people. Trans people see themselves in Bowsette. Artists see a clever challenge in the meme’s confines. Queer women see an incredibly adorable gender nonconforming person in her aesthetics. There’s the porn, sure, but Bowsette isn’t just for straight men. Across gender identities and sexualities, there’s always someone falling in love with her, ” – Why is ‘Bowsette’ So Popular? She Offers Something For Everyone–This Is News.
So whether you think she’s a symbolic icon/role model or just an awesome twist on a long beloved character, it can’t be denied that the internet will never be the same thanks to this fiery princess.
