A Nendoroid. What exactly are they? If you go to a convention, whether it be a comic con or an anime convention you’re bound to run into a vendor selling these adorable figures. (Especially if they are anime characters.) But, what exactly are they? And how did they come to be?
At first, they reminded me of a chibi version of the Funko Pop figurines, but with a lot more detail. Later on though, I learned that they were so much more. I would even say that they rival my love for the adorable Funko Pops. And that’s saying something!
The Nendoroids are made by the Good Smile company in Japan. And interestingly enough they are made from two very simple materials–PVC and ABS. They’re most known for their appearance. That being of a chibi-like appearance (large head, small body and very cute child like features.)
Another thing that sets the Nendoroids apart from your average figurine or even the well known Funko Pops is the fact that you can interchange the parts that the figurines come with. From different facial expressions to the occasional weaponry pieces that the characters can come with–it just depends on what character you get. The Good Smile Company even sells Nendoroid play sets where you can have a whole entire set for your little Nendoroid figurine.
It’s honestly no wonder that these small figurines are an absolute hit. Ranging from characters from popular anime such as My Hero Academia and Fullmetal Alchemist–my very first Nendoroid, to video game characters like Sora from Kingdom Hearts. It took me a while to warm up to these adorable figures, but the second I got my hands on my Edward Elric figure I fell in love.
So, if your looking for a small and very adorable counterpart to the tall and fragile figurines that you’re used to seeing around, I highly recommend getting a Nendoroid. After all, their collection is over 200,000 and it’s still growing!
